Lead acid batteries loose capacity with decreasing temperature and vice versa, as shown in fig. 7-6. This should be considered when sizing the battery. As corrosion processes in lead acid batteries are significantly depending on battery temperature, the battery service life time is directly related to the ambient temperature.
The recommended operating temperature for lead-acid batteries is between 10 °C and 30 °C. Technical data is valid for the nominal temperature of 20 °C. The ideal operating temperature range is 20 °C ± 5 K. Higher temperatures shorten the service life of the battery. Lower temperatures decre-ase battery capacity.
Batteries are safe when used properly. However, they contain sulfuric acid (H2SO 4), which is extremely corrosive and can cause serious injury. Further information to sulfuric acid can be found in the attached material safety data sheet. Always wear protective gloves and use the proper tools when working with lead-acid batteries.
